Where To Stay In New York City First Time On A Budget

I’m a first time traveler to New York City and I’m looking for a place to stay on a budget. I’m looking for something that is affordable, but also safe and comfortable. I’m hoping to find a place that is centrally located so I can easily explore the city. I’m also looking for a place that is close to public transportation so I can get around easily. Any advice or suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!
