How To Travel With A Guitar

I’m planning a trip and I’m wondering how to travel with my guitar. I’m worried about how to make sure it’s safe and secure during the journey. I’m also concerned about how to transport it and if I will need any special equipment. I’m not sure if I should check it in or carry it on the plane. I’m also not sure if I should invest in a hardshell case or a gig bag. I’m hoping to get some advice from other people who have traveled with a guitar before. Any tips or advice would be greatly appreciated.
